    Column Splice Length

Code requirements regarding splicing of reinforcement, including minimum splice length, are given in ACI 318-05 Chapter 12. These requirements are summarised and elaborated with detailed examples in PCA Notes on ACI 318-05. In addition, last article in chapter 5 in 'Design of Concrete Structures' by Nilson provides a good description of reinforcement splicing, along with an example on calculation of compression splice for a column. In general, provision of a splice length less than than that required by the code, will negatively affect the load or moment carrying/transferring capacity of the column. However, extent of this capacity reduction will depend upon detailed analysis and comparison of 'code required length' and the 'actually provided length'.

  6. W.salaam.. I dont have an article at hand but I have came across multiple geotechnical reports that ask for that. Basic theory for LRFD design being that factored loads shall meet factored strength. The geotechnical report provides an ultimate bearing capacity with a resistance factor of 0.3-0.6. Structural engineer has to design for all Ultimate Limit States using (0.3 to 0.6)*Ultimate Bearing Capacity. The important thing to note here is that only settlement is a Serviceability Limit State and all other Limit States are ultimate. i will update this post with power point presentation that elaborates the discussion. This is what engineers do in Canada. Thanks.

  7. You may use both ASD or LRFD, there is no restriction law of pakistan. However some organizations while making TOR specify the design code which they like to be used for their project.
