To sum it here, design your members for augmented loads(with load factors) and check them for serviceability with cracked section.. its a conservative way, super conservative to get good design. All members are good, even if they crack and meet serviceability requirements (which may be different upon their intended use).Update: Members should also be checked for strength using cracked sections. Its more safe to apply to both serviceability and strength conditions.
-
for simplicity, remember this if it has out of plane stiffness its shell, if not its membrane.
-
I think, considering LRFD load factors provides enough factor of safety. Specifically you can never "justify reduced moment of inertia after cracking" and no one knows how real the exact cracking would be, what would be its extent and how different the load distribution would be after that.
-
Deflections are affected, not the reinforcement. you can check that manually.
-
The use of these property modifiers coefficients should be for serviceability. Update: Members should be checked for strength checks also using cracked section properties.

You have to research. Comparisons are useful, talk to your advisor or teacher. Performance based design, is a very good topic. I know a friend, who got a job in Foster Wheeler because his undergrad proj was on that.

Visual Basic As A Structural Analysis Tool
UmarMakhzumi replied to asadishaq's topic in Software Issues
Its more of a programming thing. You need to learn how to solve matrices in vb. A simple search on bing would get you to it, and then you can do stiffness analysis. -
thanks guys

Hey everyone, I have never been a great fan of movies and think it is waste of time lol. anyways some of my friends are helping me change my bias against movies. So, can you share any classics.. there is one I saw this weekend, and would recommend.. Lord of the flies, 1963 Thanks

would be fun proportioning shear walls for this type of thing, as columns are super stiff. just a thought.

Affect Of Aggregate On Concrete Strength !!!
UmarMakhzumi replied to Waqar Saleem's topic in Concrete Design
.you cant really say that.. what about the w/c ratio.. what about the distribution of aggregate size ( i mean sieve analysis distribution) what about the mix design of the subject. what about the chemical properties of aggregate? there are so many things to look for. If you did a test and noticed that.. share the results. -
baz and ayesha are correct.

Lol! You are right

Stats and probability. Its not that hard. What is the the likeness of a loading exceeding a given situation. The more the likeness the more the number but based on stats and previous numbers.

Shear Strength Decreases With Depth???
UmarMakhzumi replied to Waqar Saleem's topic in Concrete Design
I will share. For your other questions, see the assumptions of beam design -
Shear strength has to do a lot with aggregate size used. A 10,000 psi concrete is high strength concrete and high strength concrete does not has normal or large aggregates. The use of small aggregate limits shear capacity. To sum it up in one line, try designing a beam without shear reinforcement with aggregate interlock as the primary mode of shear transfer. you will understand the "whole" thing. Cheers

Take it the other way, if your load creates compression in the support and its a not in a disturbed region, take critical shear at distance d from the support.

We can check it on abaqus lol

Never use an equation that you cant derive!
-
Thats right and it makes your case more critical for wind cases.

Underground Water Tank Walls And Top Slab Load!!!
UmarMakhzumi replied to Waqar Saleem's topic in Concrete Design
You can use the document posted by "baz" that lists Two Way Slab/ plates design coefficients subjected to different kinds of loading. I m using this site on my phone warna link share karta. Its in the forum, concrete section most likely. We have used that document to design anything that falls into a 2-way slab. Very Handy- 2 replies

Shear Strength Decreases With Depth???
UmarMakhzumi replied to Waqar Saleem's topic in Concrete Design
Rightly said! University of Toronto has some free softwares that can be used for members having substansial shear deformations.. Shear strength is the only department where canadians are at lead from the rest of the world, considering concrete. I have lots of papers on it. If it interests anyone, please let me know. I can share. -
It a great post. Rana, talk to me on skype this coming weekend. Guys please add your suggestions down. I will remove the inactive mods next week and decide an action plan streamlined with your suggestions. Many Thanks
