  1. I dont know what is the plan, but for that length of cantilever girders should be pre-stressed . Make your you do all kinds of serviceability checks too in addition to strength checks and also design it for a higher base shear, as said in UBC. P.S torsion can be there too. watch out!
  2. ask Muhammad Hassan . He worked on a dam for his capstone.
  3. Get some good books, study them, Install a FEA program and play with it. That is the only way. I wont suggest a FEA thing for undergrad capstone project.
  4. For field construction, plazas and commercial buildings all buildings are RCC frames. Use of brick is only for infill walls and for that , strength is not that major issue, so maybe brick testing is still insignificant yet because of its secondary use. Good share though.
  5. You can do Finite element parametric study for Design of cold-formed steel oval or hollow section columns. Try to talk to cold form column manufactures, You can get good funding too. The best place to start would be journal directories like Science Direct, ASCE etc I hope your university has membership to them and look for related research papers. HEC offers access to a lot of journals too but I am not sure how their subscription works.
  6. It is a good idea but most of us are not in Pakistan. If you are interested I can pm you the name of the firm where I worked and you can apply there.
  7. You can perform a multistorey frame analysis with different kind of Seismic Force Resistant Systems and compare them. It will help you getting acquainted with ETABS and would be a plus point in interviews!
  8. Its in karachi, and karachi is zone 2A or 2B, Height I am not sure!
  9. Do u plan to analyse an old existing masonry building? Can you explain further please?
  10. Can you please explain, what do you mean by "bent down" at ends ? If bottom rebar is bent down it would project out of slab base?
  11. The picture below, is of Olive View Hospital, 1971 San Fernando Earthquake, CA, US San Fernando, California, Earthquake February 1971. Here is another view The spiral column displaced 18" from center and is still in good shape and taking load, where as the rectangular columns with ties behaved as below. This difference in behavior is attributed to the greater confinement spirals provide resulting into a better "Poisson ratio" & Improved ductility of the system overall. FYI, this building had a soft story and also had hammering due to RCC Core Wall not separated well enough from adjacent part of building. For your question about rectangular or circular column, I would say Circular are good if required for use in high seismic zones and are provided with spirals instead of circular ties. Circular Columns are aesthetically beautiful too..
  12. Geotechnical Engineers provide Geotechnical Investigation Report. That has recommendations for Structural Engineers that they use while designing foundation.
  13. reminds me of a question on mid term of masters exam, where a concrete wall had temperature of a -30 on 1 side and +18 on other with an udl on top and reinforcement placed at the center of the wall and the question to find the critical load for that given reinforcement and wall section.. that was pretty cruel !
  14. Is your job same as the kind of work Zamil Steel does?
  15. A column subjected to bending will have one face in tension and other will be in compression. Central bar will have minimal contribution.
  16. Send him a message through inbox. He will be get notified on his email. Thanks
  17. They know they know they know

  18. The new members are strongly encouraged to introduce themselves. Thats the only way we can know where you are good at and may be you can help us with a section on the forum. Thank You!
  19. Hi Everyone, I have added a new profile field: "Employer". The idea is that people can have an idea about what kind of company you work for.(EPC, commercial, Testing etc). Please take a moment and update your profiles. Thanks.
  20. Hi Everyone, If you have tried to sign up using facebook and do not have full access to forum, its most likely because you didn't fill in all the fields when signing up. Review your profile and make sure you have all necessary fields filled in especially "Display Name". I have seen a lot of sign ups with an empty display name. You have to fill it to complete the registration process. Thanks!
