Some of the excuses we tell ourselves are: I don’t know anyone who has done it before/ too many people are already trying. I don’t have enough (money, power, skills, education, time) If I was going to do it, I would have done it already. I have too many responsibilities. I am too old or young. I will never be the best. Too many people are ahead of me. It’s not the right time. But, what if we simply rephrased these excuses into empowering beliefs? It doesn’t matter what other people are doing, this is my dream. I have more than enough resources to get started. There’s no time like the present! My number one priority is living passionately. My age gives me a unique perspective, and is only a number. There will always be someone to learn from. It will never be perfect, so I might as well stop stalling and start now.
  3. but keep in mind the factor for Fluid Load is 1.2 not 1.6 as in case of live!
  4. i agree with you about the ETABS book ...bt my aim is not to earn money...yeah it will come so i will accept but the thing is, im want to be a developer & writer My first basic version of ETABS (available for free in this forum and my blog) was downloaded 2500 times...so even if you consider the full package, it could reach upto 500 downloads (suppose) that makes a lot of money ! and abt apps yeah the price will range from 0.99 to 2$. but it will take some time...keep waiting
  5. well...when microsoft will launch (surface) or similar laptop type things....the others (apple & samsung) would not be probably sleeping ...anyways...what i perceive is you cannot take a technology out to nothing in just 3 years...anyways...thanks for your motivation....
  6. tablet 10.1 (tab2) (i have this) plus i will go for galaxy s2, s3 and tablet 7.1 too!
  7. Hmm simple tools like concrete beam design, column interaction ratio, complex geometry calculations, crack width, min reinforcement etc..many ideas...slab design, foundation design, retaining wall design. Actually I will include all the tools and present them separately each one on android..but the windows based full program will have all of them in one unit!....all these tools are there for free on my blog but im going a step further now...(just thinking...sine last 8 months..) but i know think that i can do it in ramadan, as i will have lot of boring time after just 6 hrs of office...here in Riyadh!
  8. I have just started using Android! and i am trying to make and sell struc application. If anyone interested he can join me. Plus i am writing a book on ETABS (2nd version actually) with full solved examples, checklists and explanation, and a software for windows WS Structural Tools...I will include all my VB/VBA developed tools in it...but this time i want to step in the market...the price range would be (just wild guess) i think 20$ to 35$ for windows based software and book each and about 2-3$ for android apps.
  9. i think undergrad is for basics...not for THA advance topic! Instead of THA they should tell students about more load combinations instead of just 1.4D+1.7L (old) and tell them about other codes too (just basics) but THA is really outside the scope of undergrad! it needs basics of theory and understanding and then practice. who in undergrad will learn such an advanced topic like THA of only STRUCTURAL course? when he is also studying geotech, transportaion, computer, steel, buisness, ethics,,,,etc
  10. Look you can not model each and every thing in your structural software...Yes you can for research purposed but for practical purposes you should never because:- 1) It takes time and not practicle in tight schedules and dead lines 2) the affect of it might be less than only 1% 3) keep the things simple to understand for reviewing team and for your self too There are many assumptions, things we base our calculations on those. Many things we ignore and many we assume. Its engineering! I would recommend you to not model lean, as sir Umar said not model plaster and so on! Be a structural guy!
  11. Dear members, I have different concrete strengths of column and slab and the difference is exactly 40%. I mean col strength is 70mPa and slab strength is 40mPa. 70/40 = 1.40 I am following ACI code, i will quote ACI 10.12 "Transmission of column loads through floor system" It is written that "if f'c of column is greater than 1.4 times that of the floor system, transmission of load through the floor system shall be provided by 10.12.1, 10.12.2 or 10.12.3." In these 10.12.1 to 3 concrete placing and determination of strength is addressed. My question is i have exactly 40% difference...NOT MORE THAN 40%. so can i IGNORE this caluse? and what is the practical solution you would suggest.
  12. you will multiply the total length by the weight of the bar for example...the weight of the bar #3 is 0.376 lb/ft so 0.376 x total length = total weight in pounds 1 kg = 2.204 pounds
  13. determine the dia of spiral by subracting dia of column-cover and then as you know circum = pi D..thats the length of one round approx... divide the column height covered with spiral divide by spacing + 1 that is the number of ties
  14. Read chapter 10...Actually concrete cracks just after it reaches its tensile strength (about 7.5 to 10 or 12% of its compressive strength). before that the reinforcement is not taking action. So once concrete starts cracking...(when concrete cannot take tension) reinfrocement starts taking the tension. Now obviously when concrete cracks...we cannot analyze our section based on full inertia...so we have to reduce the stiffness, because its in reality. like this.. Now how we can reduce its properties? there are many methods...like the one given in chapter 10 of the code (ACI). like we reduce beam stiffness by 35% and column by 70% (uncracked) ... this is all relative.. I mean if you have only all the beams. even if you dont reduce stiffness it will be ok! but why we reduce stiffness is to redistribute internal forces from less stiff to more stiff areas like from beams (35%) to columns or walls (70% reduction).. So this way it ensures proper load path and distribution of loads based on stiffness
  15. live load will be reduced if you select so from preferences option
  16. well start posting your problems. As the forum will grow we will try adding new features. But as we have too few members so has to put it later. Anyways. I think this topic is about to be closed. You can post your models and problems. I will personally try to give you feedback but the skype and class rooms are at this very moment very hard to to! I hope you understand!
  17. If you specify reducible live load in static load cases then it will apply live load reduction based on OPTIONS>PREFERENCES>LIVE LOAD REDUCTION parameters. If you apply only normal LIVE load cases then the live load reduction will not have any affect on this!
  18. SAFE doesnt calculate punching if the point is on some line or wall or beam etc...Make sure you dont have any dummy line below those points. I checked your model and run it..Its giving all the values less than 1
  19. well no one can give you each and every detail about how to model it. We can provide you with the basic guidelines and concept, provided that you have the background in using the appropriate options and commands in software. I know we all start learning from zero but you need some one who can train you step by step; may be in your office. I have downloaded your files and if possible i can give you files 2 hrs on weekend to make a tutorial for you! happy?
  20. my point was that they are not taking interest because they are still jobless and now working...and plus no light in pakistan :S
  21. Look what i understood from your question is that In SAFE 8 1) when you make 30" thick raft it gives you punching ratio more than 1. bcz 30" may not be adequate for your loads 2) when you make 39" thick raft (drop) on already placed 30" raft. It gives your value greater than 1 because, still the perimeter may not be adequate and thcikness may not be ok! tell me the loads 3) When you make 30" and 39" overlapping each other they dont make 30+39, rather they the largest of them is used for caluclation. 4) In SAFE 8 there is also an option for the location, and cover and bar size data. You must have to prvide that data to get the desired results!
