@sameersaleem how to check which punching perimeter safe is using? @umarmakhzumi you mean to say provide raft footing under 4 columns so the water tank load should be equally divided on these 4 columns? -

Load on top right column at service = 118 kips Load on bottom right column at service = 60 kips The option of moving water tank can be considered. Yes there is a wall between two columns at ground level. There is no wall footing etc. -
Asalamualaikum all, I have columns which are conflicting with the underground water tank as shown in figure. So I have decided to make underground water tank base slab as a footing for column. So I import etabs model to safe and just take uniform water load on base slab and point load from columns. This is the residential house. The BC is 2tsf. But SAFE is showing tension on the base slab and the thickness from punching is 30''. I believe that thickness is too high. What can be the error? Is this approach is correct for design base slab of ugwt to carry load of two edge columns?

For Weak Storey check If columns are flexure controlled, the shear strength is the shear corresponding to the flexural strength. (Ref: http://www.iitk.ac.in/nicee/IITK-GSDMA/EQ06.pdf) So I used to calculate flexure strength (Flexural capacity) of column section and then divide this by the length of column to find the maximum shear it can resist before flexure failure may occur. This will give me the shear strength of an individual column. then adding these all will give storey shear strength. its like adding moment at top and bottom of the column to get the shear force of the column. (the way usually people do to calculate internal forces manually) I dont have exact reference, but i will research on it and will let you know.

To find weak storey, I used to calculate flexure capacity of columns and then divide them with member length to get shear strength of the column. Then I add all the columns shear strength present in one storey to get the shear strength of one storey. Is this method correct?

For grillage system, is there any special detailing requirement?

Asalamualaikum everyone, If I have two beams of same stiffness and present at same level, how can i decide which beam is supporting the other beam? What would be moment diagram look like? How to do the detailing at the mid joint? What change should be done in ETABs or SAP software? Attached is the figure of the model I have break one beam so the other beam should act as support but moment diagram show only positive moment for both beams. Thankyou

Being a civil engineer, we learn how to design RC structures which consists of beams and columns. what about load bearing structure? Where can I get information regarding design of brick masonry structure that is common practice in most part of Punjab... And can we model it on Etabbs and check pier and spandrel forces, etc?

What is the difference in cold formed steel structure and Light gauge steel structure?

Asalamualaikum, Are seismic zones same for eurocode and UBC? In UBC, we have zone 4 as the high seismic zone. In Eurocode, do we have same seismic zones? I am doing risk assesment using ELER software, it have three seismic zones for European building, Zone 1,2 and 3... What is the PGA for Zone 1 2 and 3 for European building codes? You can not design infill walls since they are unreinforced masonry. You can do analysis by considering infill as an equivalent single strut means considering it as a truss element by providing moment releases in the RC frame.

Thank you all. I was thinking whether ties contribute in shear the same way as they do in beams when called as stirrups? I have read somewhere that ties do not contribute in resisting shear. They are used to prevent main bars in columns from buckling.

Asalamualaikum, If I know any column section, I can compute its section capacity in terms of yield moment using SAP section analysis or Response 2000 softwares. But if I want to find whether a column is failing in shear or not, what procedure should I use? For example, I have a column of 6'' x 18'' with 6 #4 bars and ties of #3@6'' c/c. I have done pushover analysis on software, Now I want to check whether column is safe in shear or not. So I note down the internal shear forces of column from the software at each step of pushover analysis and manually compare them with column shear capacity using ; Column shear capacity = Shear force resistance due to concrete (2 * lamda* fc'^1/2 * bd) Is this the correct method? or do I need to consider ties as well in resisting shear? If yes, then Vs=Avfyd/s formula will be used for ties resistance or something else? Thanks for the help

Flight#3 is designed as simply supported, it is resting on centre of landing at elev 6'6" and centre of landing at elev 11'6". This has reduced the length (L), so the waist slab thickness is reduced from 11'' to 8''. Personally, I don't know whether it is a correct practice to support a flight on landing rather than beam and consider it as simply supported. Thank you.
