Hello I am working of macro modeling in sap2000. I have to model a masonary walls in sap2000 by link elememt method approach . I have to draw the ML plastic and Elastic link but I am confused in some parameters .How can I define the force -displacement for the skeleton curve and what should be the parameters for hystersis ?

Wall panels are required to be designed which should be load bearing as well as insulated. A concept is developed to build such panels with total thickness of 8” (20 cm), having two layers of high-performance concrete sheets on the sides filled with the insulation, each of these two sheets to be of 3-4 cm thick reinforced concrete, using welded wire mesh as reinforcement, both sheets should be linked with vertical reinforced concrete ribs (columns) placed at short distance, in order to; (1) provide enough stiffness against axial load and buckling, (2) carrying the built-in beam to transfer the load of slab and (3) the entire panel will work as bracing for the frame structure to take the lateral loads in seismic zones. In addition to that the house construction with such panels is assumed to be more economical than the overall brick and concrete structure. The question is that how can we perform the analysis and design calculation of such panels especially can we use ETABS to conduct such analysis and design calculations? If yes, please let me know how? As I have tried to find out in my ETABS 2016 but could not. There is a provision for core wall design but not the hollow insulated wall as mentioned above. Thanks and best regards. Aslam

I accidentally came across these useful case studies, which, I would like to share. You can use them if you are working on a commercial or residential building retrofitting project. These case studies provide insight about seismic retrofitting and also on analytical methods, that are used for building assessment. I would also like to give due credit to people who are involved in these studies. All these studies were performed under a US-Pakistani Joint Cooperation Project. The details for the project are. 6-Storey Mixed Use Building in Karachi.pdf 10-Storey Office Building in Karachi.pdf RS-4 Storey Academic Building in Karachi.pdf Five Storey Residential Apartment.docx

How i can model masonry infill as a equivalent diagonal strut in SAP2000. I have to go for No-Linear Time History Analysis. Which type of element will be used for diagonal strut modeling representing the masonry infill behavior. Simple diagonal beam element with axial hinge at center ? Or using Link Element with GAP properties ? Kindly share the complete procedure for modeling equivalent diagonal strut in SAP2000 with openings (Doors and Windows)

How can we model masonry wall as strut in sap2000. In etabs when defining material you have option for masonry & you can input all its properties, (I used one presented in FEMA356). & then assigned strut as bracing. The problem is there is no masonry material available in sap2000, so when I modified concrete to represent masonry & then used section designer option to made strut, the results obtained by both software didn't match.

What to takes in Regarding masonry infills definition in e-tabs whether i will takes Shell Thin or Membrane ?

I have done a pushover analysis of 3-storey 1-bay masonary infilled frame using opensees and as i look into the shear profile of the frame at various time steps the shear in cols is a little negative intially and then becomes positive and the increases in the positive direction with the increasing lateral load until the infill breaks.... why is it negative initially (i.e. in the elastic range)?

i am modelling an infilled RC frame using single strut in opensees software, the base shear versus disp response of the frame does not show that the infill fails.... what could be the reason for that,, is it possible that an infill does not fail ?

Assalam o alaikum. Why dont we model masonary wall in etabs while modeling frame? Walls are there with their stiffness participation by reducimg displacements in an earthquack. Is it because we consider walls will fall when seismic force will act on walls perpendicular to plan of walls? More over one of my friend told me that now a days practice of construction in islamabad, quetta and kashmir , houses are built with masorany walls along with columns. The frame provided is designed for lower seismic zone than original and for lower ductility. My question is does it act as dual system? Means walls are considered to resist lateral forces and the frame ( in which beam is not designed to take slab load) is provided just to have some extra stiffness.... what exact concept is used behind such design, if any one is familiar with?

1. i am working on a project in zone 3, should i consider the Brick masonry struts? and what is the effect of Brick masonry struts on moment and Axial force of columns, ' 2. Can someone have a detail document that how to define Brick masonry Strut in Etabs thanks

Salam Alaikom fellow Engineers! I have found the "The Seismic Performance of RC Frame Buildings with Masonry Infill Walls" article very useful. So I would like to share it with you, especially for junior structure design engineers. Regards The Seismic Performance of RC Frame Buildings with Masonry Infill Walls.pdf
