Hey guys i got loads of info here but i have some questions... I really need your help!

I did DAE in Civil and now i am doing B-Tech in Civil! And i am also doing an auto-cad course of 6months duration from nicon(because from the info i got, i was told that i must have a good grip on auto cad to work on etabs, safe and revit etc). I have no field experience or anything. I want to start my practical experience as a structural site engineer(if its possible in pakistan).

I am preparing myself to move to uae as soon as i complete my b.tech hons degree and do ms in structural engineering from hariot watt university or any other good university. Can i get admission over there? And be able to register as an engineer.

I have to do industrial training for my b.tech degree, should i start my job in uae and do it there and then come back to pakistan! Does the experience of pakistan also counts or am i just wasting my time here..

Are there any institutes etc in islamabad which offer etabs, revit and safe etc courses.? i just want to be prepared in advance soo that when i move to uae, i start my career as a structural engineer!

Please guide me to enter this field! its my dream and i need some guidance thanks alot in advance :)

to be structural engineer u need to have BSc civil engg degree and than MS structural engg degree.the qualification u have is DAE and currently u r doing B-tech which is good enough to work in field as site engineer but not as structural engineer.u can register yourself with saudi engineering council on basis of b-tech plus experience so that u can get engineer status there.in pakistan there is PTC like PEC,dnt know how active it is.

Danny! I am glad to know your PASSION about structural engineering! Life without a passion is useless, i think. You have already begun your journey believe me! Lets not talk about DAE or Degree!

If you can get admission in HW in dubai! then just do it man! I am currently a distant learner in ms in HW but not sure about admission procedures. I would recommend you to goto HW website, check admission criteria, send them an email regarding your concerns. I would say if its possible then just go for it!

Regarding ETABS etc dont worry about it! I would not recommend you to take courses for ETABS like CAD, as both are totally different in concept! With more education and experience you will eventually learn but you cannot just grasp the subject in 2 months courses. Just try to learn from the material posted in this forum, start doing small examples and ask help from others.

I am not a site guy so not sure about site engineering thing! As far as design is concerned, go for ms after b-tech! dont worry about pakistan or abroad experience. money doesnt matter yr! just get it!

I have emailed them *fingers crossed* hoping for a good news anyways this is their eligibility criteria, i cant figure out if i am eligible. What do you guys think? And the second paragraph is a little reassuring!

Normal entry qualification is a good university degree (usually a UK 2:2 Honours or equivalent) in a relevant subject including engineering, environmental science, geography, geology, mathematics, etc.

It is recognised that good practitioners may not have this entry level qualification; consequently, consideration will be given to relevant professional and field experiences and candidates that show promise will be admitted for the programme.

And whats your take on distant learning from hw? Whats the full duration and how does it work? Is it difficult? Cause hw dubai campus doesnt offer ms in SE! Should i take admission in some other university in uae or go for distant learning?

And is it possible for me to enter structural engineering field in pakistan while i am doing my btech. I am not asking for a job or a salary. All i am asking for is experience. I really wanna start my career from this field. Do you know any firms in islamabad where i can do that?

AND NOW I REALLY FEEL LIKE I HAVE BEGUN MY JOURNEY! Thanks a million Rana waseem and Waqar saleem! :)

look! this world is so unfair! its a fact! you have a good degree you still might not get a good job! okay!

and who says if ur a b.tech u cant be good structural engineer! yes practitioners may not have qualification. and yes international universities recognise this! Unfortunately i dont have any idea if any firm in pakistan thinks out of the box and go out of the normal ways! but keep moving, keep struggling!

Distant learning is yes difficult, I would not recommend it to you! Fee is same, duration is max 7 years, Its upto you! course is same, infact everything is same! difference is just have to study your self! which is difficult!

Do you think Mark Twain, Henry Ford, William Shakespeare or Albert Einstein had degrees? You already have B.Tech! just ask your self! "WHY CANT YOU?"

if it were possible than there wud be sale of shakespeares and mark twains ,albert einstien.

There is no such thing as being realistic. Everything is possible. Be ambitious. Challenge everything. Success is continuous failure and that is what defines a successful person. Just go and happen to things. Allah will help you.  :)

then there should be a million AQ khan where are they?

The concept is that: "Shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you will land in stars". Just because you are trying to achieve something that is not possible from one perspective and even if you don't achieve it you will still become something not as great as your inspiration but better than what you used to be.

guyz only thing that matters is passion! i was in school, our school motto was "i can, i will", my college motto was "courage to know" i still remember that all!

you just need to have THE TALENT, THE PASSION, willingness to learn! atleast i see in him, all this, so would not i appreciate and try to inspire him more. to be honest i think, even if some has willingness to learn, he can learn engineering without even a degree.

this is not to point out anyone! and not to let any one down! but guyz appreciate him atleast for what he thinks!

“‎There are dreamers and there are realists in this world, you think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists, but more often than not the opposite is true. See the dreamers need the realists to keep the dreamers from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists? Well without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground”

Rana Waseem@  You have been very inspiring and i really needed that motivation, thanks alot! And i got an email from HW which says that i can apply for the masters program! And I'm also in contact with some universities in the UK. I can get admission in either msc structural engineering program or msc civil engineering(With concentration or specialization in structural engineering)... ( i may have to do a PGD first depends on my experience ) but 'I CAN' ;) . And i can also get registered at IET and ICE (UK). So yeah i am gonna move to either uk or uae as soon as i get my honours degree or do it through distant learning and enter this field no matter what! In the mean time i am buying books and tutorials on etabs etc, studying american and British building codes and standards. And i am in contact with some structural engineers, trying to find someone who can may be give me home tuition or something all i want is to learn.

Wish me luck guys and thanks everyone! And I'd really appreciate it, if you guys could help me and guide me to my passion! :)

    • Hi there,
I am interested in performing "Performance Based Design" for a 20 story building.
I'll be performing "Non-Linear Static Pushover Analysis" for my model. Until now, I have decided to go with "Displacement Co-efficient method". I will be using ETABS 2017 for performing Pushover Analysis. While assigning plastic hinges, I have an option of using ASCE 41-17 (Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing buildings". I would like to know what would be a better estimate for relative distances for plastic hinges in case of beams, columns. Any input concerning assignment of hinges to beams, columns and shear walls is highly appreciated. Normally it's taken 0.05 and 0.95 or 0.1 and 0.9. What's your opinion on this?
Secondly, it would be great if someone can recommend me a book or some good source to understand how to characterize building using performance levels. Any sort of help is appreciated.
I have recently graduated and joined a structural design firm, so kindly guide me, considering me a beginner.

      1.1. FUNCTION OF JOINT

Beam-column joint must transfer the forces, such as moment, shear and torsion, transferred by the beam to the column so that the structure can maintain its integrity to carry loads for which it is designed.

Another function of the beam-column joint is to help the structure to dissipate seismic forces so that it can behave in a ductile manner.

      1.2.WHY DO WE CARE

During an extreme seismic event, the code-based structure is expected to maintain its load-carrying capacity for gravity loads even after the structure deforms into inelastic range so that it does not pose any life safety hazard. Hence, the joint can go through significant degradation of strength and stiffness, and if it fails in shear, or anchorage, the life-safety objective of code cannot be achieved.

      1.3.CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE

1.4.THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR BEAM COLUMN JOINT

Longitudinal bars of beams, or slab, must be able to develop their yield stress, so that the beam/slab can transfer moment to joint. It means that longitudinal bars must have adequate development length for hooked bars. This implies that the size of the column must be such that bars can develop their tensile forces. If bars can transfer moment, they can also transfer shear as far as monolithic construction is concerned.

The shear strength of the joint must enable the transfer of moment and shear through it.

The joint should be Constructible: Congestion of reinforcement is the main concern.

1.5.DESIGN SHEAR FOR BEAM COLUMN JOINT

The design shear for beam-column joint depends upon the relative strength of beam and column at the joint.

    • *Comments/Observations regarding modelling in ETABS*

      *Doc No: 10-00-CD-0006*

      *Date: May 06, 2017*

Some of the observations made during extraction of results from ETABS (v 9.7.4), for design of reinforced concrete members, are being share in this article.,

      1) Minimum Eccentricity

ETABS always considers the minimum eccentricity for selecting the design moment of columns irrespective of the probable behavior of the column, whether short or long column. See section 10.10.6.5 and its commentary of ACI 318-08 which deals with minimum eccentricity of long columns. You should always check the design moments that ETABS uses for columns if you want to bring down the cost of construction.

      2) Unbraced/ Braced Preference

ETABS always performs analysis of frame as if it is un-braced. You should investigate if the storey under consideration is braced, or un-braced (10.10.5.2), and decide appropriate design moments of columns.

      3) Time Period

ETABS has a tendency to select a time period of the building that is considerably less than the value obtained by the approximate method, Method A, of the section 1630.2.2  of UBC 97. To quote the FEMA 451 document: ''Because this formula is based on lower bound regression analysis of measured building response in California, it will generally result in periods that are lower (hence, more conservative for use in predicting base shear) than those computed from a more rigorous mathematical model". So, there is no need to use the value of time period that is lot less than Ta. One should always check the time period used by the software; ETABS can overestimate the seismic force by more than 2 times.

    • The minimum amount and spacing of reinforcement to be used in structural floors, roof slabs, and walls for control of temperature and shrinkage cracking is given in ACI 318 or in ACI 350R. The minimum-reinforcement percentage, which is between 0.18 and 0.20%, does not normally control cracks to within generally acceptable design limits. To control cracks to a more acceptable level, the percentage requirement needs to exceed about 0.60% (REFRENCE ACI COMMITE REPORT 224R-01)

So according to above statement , should we follow 0.60%, to be on more safe side??

    • Dear members, I am working on a 10 storied rcc factory building with one basement,  where floor loads are in general 125 psf(Live) . but there are 2 warehouse in the building at ground floor & 10th floor where the Live load of stacked materials are 450psf. I have modeled it and analysed in ETABS. After analysis, seeing the floor displacement for seismic load,  i am in big shock to see the pattern. the displacement pattern suddenly increased hugely & then got normal . if the warehouse load created problem, then why it effected only Ground floor level, not the 10th floor! Please tell me how can i solve it.

    • Asalamualaikum all,

I have columns which are conflicting with the underground water tank as shown in figure.

So I have decided to make underground water tank base slab as a footing for column. So I import etabs model to safe and just take uniform water load on base slab and point load from columns.

This is the residential house. The BC is 2tsf. But SAFE is showing tension on the base slab and the thickness from punching is 30''. I believe that thickness is too high. What can be the error? Is this approach is correct for design base slab of ugwt to carry load of two edge columns?
